Want to know why we started National Movie Night? Or even what National Movie Night is? Keep reading for all the information!

Growing up my younger sister and I would spend our summer days together in our basement watching movies. We’d dress up and act them out, and learn our favorites word for word. Movies bring people together. They tell stories, evoke emotions, and allow us to see and experience things that we otherwise might not be able to.

I have enjoyed re-watching movies from my childhood, sharing them with my children and seeing the moments that brought me so much joy do the same for them.

With all of this love surrounding movies, I started to wonder if there was a national holiday dedicated to movie nights. So I went on to my favorite website called National Day Calendar to look up all of the random, fun, and quirky holidays to see if something existed. But it didn’t.

So I decided to create one.

How National Movie Night Came To Be

I’ve been using the National Day Calendar as a resource for years, discovering random holidays that I can celebrate with the kids and my friends. I believe that we should cherish every day we experience world, because tomorrow is not promised. Having a day dedicated to a particular cause makes doing so easier, and fun. I mean who doesn’t love National Popcorn Day!

When I realized that National Movie Night was not yet a holiday, I applied for one on the National Day Calendar website on a whim. The site receives thousands of applications every year and only accepts 10-20 of those, so when I submitted my application, I had no idea if they would accept it or not.

A few months after my application, I received confirmation that my holiday request had been accepted. We picked a date, and just like that, National Movie Night was born!

The holiday falls on the second Friday of June each year, making it the perfect celebration of the start of the school holidays and get together with family or friends during the break. This year that falls on June 10th, 2022.
