Are you ready for the ULTIMATE Disney Live Action Movies List in Order? Read here for the full list, perfect for your family movie night!
Streaming has made movies so much more accessible these days, and Disney+ is a staple in our house. I still make an effort to collect DVDs of our Disney favorites, because they remind me of my mom’s VHS Disney collection when I was growing up. But for ease, we tend to watch on Disney+, because we’re all big Disney fans in this house.
Something interesting I’ve noticed is a lot of kids these days prefer the live action movies over their animated counterparts. Good news for fans is news that Disney has ramped up their live action repertoire by a lot in the last 5+ years.
Today, I thought it would be fun to take a look at where it all started and go through each live action Disney remake and adaptation in order! And you know we’ve got your back with the printable checklist for you to save and use with your families. Read on for that!
The ULTIMATE List: Disney Live Action Movies in Order

1. Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book December 25, 1994
Based on the classic tale by Rudyard Kipling, this 1994 live action version tells the story of how Mowgli was raised by animals. They did a good job for the time, but we definitely prefer the newer live action remake.

2. 101 Dalmatians | November 27, 1996
The 101 Dalmatians live action movie is a classic, and tells the story of how Cruella De Vil, an evil high-fashion designer, schemes to steal dalmatian puppies to create an extravagant fur coat. Things do not go to plan. This remake was done really well, and I remember thoroughly enjoying it!

3. 102 Dalmatians | November 22, 2000
Spoiler alert! After being released from prison, Cruella De Vil gets out of prison. Reformed and now a lover of dogs and good causes, she befriends her parole officer’s dalmatian family and gets involved in a dog charity. But will it last?

4. Alice in Wonderland | March 5, 2010
More sequel than remake, this live action Alice in Wonderland follows an adult Alice as she travels back to Wonderland. She meets old friends and foes, and learns of her true destiny in this whimsical world.

5. Maleficent | May 30, 2014
I’m not sure if you can call this a live action remake, as the story is so different from the original Sleeping Beauty. In this version, you see the story from Maleficent’s perspective, where she is driven to curse infant Aurora. Then, the vengeful fairy realizes that Aurora might be the only person that can restore peace.

6. Cinderella | March 13, 2015
This remake of Cinderella is beautifully done, telling the classic story of how Cinderella is cruelly treated by her stepmother and stepsisters. This all changes when she meets a mysterious stranger and she gets to attend the ball. You can read my daughter’s review here!

7. The Jungle Book | April 15, 2016
The second adaption of the classic tale is one of my son’s favorites, and it impresses me every time I see it. You can read our full The Jungle Book review here!

8. Alice Through the Looking Glass | May 27, 2016
Another live action sequel, so not exactly a remake. In this movie, Alice travels through time to save the Mad hatter from fatal grief. Of course, all of this is not without peril, and she has to deal with Time himself. Read my full review here and my daughter’s review here!

9. Pete’s Dragon | August 12, 2016
Pete’s Dragon is an adaption very loosely based on the Disney original. It tells the story of Pete, an orphan, and his best friend Elliott. The kicker? Elliott is a dragon, so they have some grand adventures!

10. Beauty and the Beast | March 17, 2017
The live action Beauty and the Beast remake stays very true to the original. It tells the story of how Belle gets imprisoned by a monster, who turns out to be a cursed prince. I’d have preferred more modern changes to the story, but that’s all up to preference. You can read our full review here and what my 6 year old daughter thought here!

11. Christopher Robin | August 3, 2018
Another live action sequel, this movie follows an adult Christopher Robin, who is now a serious working man. Suddenly his childhood friend Winnie the Pooh shows up to ask him for help, and he has to make some important decisions.

12. Dumbo | March 29, 2019
This live action remake tells the story of Dumbo, the flying elephant. Luckily, the story is completely different from the quite problematic original, so that’s a huge improvement. Dumbo’s flying abilities help save a struggling circus, but Dumbo and his friends uncover dark secrets below the surface after the circus plans a new venture. You can find our review here!

13. Aladdin | May 24, 2019
This is my favorite remake on this list. It tells the classic story of Aladdin, with enough changes to make the story feel fresh while still staying true to the original. It tells the story of Aladdin and his adventure competing with Jafar for the magic lamp that can make all their wishes come true. You can read our full review here!

14. The Lion King | July 19, 2019
This live action remake is an exact copy of the animated version of The Lion King. It follows Simba on his journey to adulthood. Unfortunately, it lacks the emotion of the animated version, but my kids loved it nonetheless. You can find our full review here!

15. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil | October 18, 2019
This sequel to Maleficent is a fantastic follow-up to the first movie and a great addition to the world of Sleeping Beauty. Set 5 years after the first movie, you learn more about the family ties between Maleficent and her goddaughter Aurora. My family loved it, as you can read in our full review here!

16. Lady and the Tramp | November 12, 2019
This version of Lady and the Tramp is a pretty accurate live action copy of the original. A sheltered Cocker Spaniel (Lady) meets a stray (Tramp), and we follow them as they fall in love.

17. Mulan | September 4, 2020
The live action version of Mulan is a retelling of the original with more backstory and heart. You truly get to know Mulan as she joins the army to save her father, trains as a soldier and later becomes a true leader helping to save the empire. You can read my full review here and my kids’ review here!

18. Cruella | May 28, 2021
A live action prequel to 101 Dalmatians, this movie follows a young Cruella de Vil. You learn more about her backstory and motives. It’s an interesting take on the classic villain with excellent storytelling. If you’re interested in learning more, you can read my full review here!

19. Pinocchio | September 8, 2022
This is Disney’s most recent live action remake, and I have to admit that I haven’t seen it yet. Pinocchio tells the classic tale of the wooden boy named Pinocchio, as he tries to become a real boy.
On the horizon:
20. The Little Mermaid | Summer 2023
21. Peter Pan & Wendy | 2023
22. Mufasa: The Lion King | 2024
23. Snow White | 2024
While live action Disney movies can be a bit hit or miss, there are some fantastic remakes in this Disney Live Action Movies in Order list. I especially love it when they add to the source material or when a pre- or sequel is exceptionally well done. Some of those are my absolute favorites and perfect for your next family movie night! I’ve put together this Disney Live Action Movies in Order checklist that you can use to keep track of all the Disney live action remakes you’ve seen, mark your favorites and compare the animated originals with the remakes.
